Shard#16: Wreck My Car

I took out a loan and bought us a car
The first either of us had owned
It would be the chariot for our child
We’d carry her gently every mile

We laughed the day you scraped the door
How we can never have nice things
You could barely fit behind the wheel
And filled each room with warmth to spill

One day you bought yourself your own
Suddenly Our car was Mine
You put the keys into my hand
My knees sunk to the driveway sand

I gave everything away and lost it all
Left alone with an empty tank
The last surviving room from our family home
I carry it with me now wherever I go

Call me out, write me off
My hands loosen on the wheel
They know I fell but can’t see how far
Well, tonight I’m gonna wreck my car.

The seats all empty except for mine
In the mirror I pull my hat low
Ninety, a hundred, one hundred and ten
You’ll never see see these sky blues again

Screaming at the windscreen til my throat is hoarse
I push my foot all the way down
Good god above please don’t get in my way
On this road I smash all I can’t say

The size of this tragedy impossible to hold
Tunnel vision is my only hope
A soft man will only hurt himself
After dark, in private, to your health

All that glitters can’t be held
All things bright and new turn old
Safety in love is a lie, that’s a fact
I undo the seatbelt, sitting back

The last of our love, metallic carnage
I’ve destroyed everything that I can
What left is there for me to release?
So you can go on living in peace
